Design/layout for Wisconsin news station Channel3000.com

The goal of Channel3000.com’s redesign was to clean up the cluttered look and confusing navigation throughout the site. The old site was outdated and had no design consistency whatsoever - dozens of clashing colors, different fonts for seemingly everything, dead-end navigation, etc.

After re-imagining the site map and condensing information, we were ready to provide a fresh look and feel. My goal was to create something very clean, efficient, and perhaps most importantly, easy to use. After all - the goal of a news site should be delivering news to users with ease.

I started by providing a few color palettes with no more than two main colors with shade variations. By subduing the colors (shades of blues and grays were ultimately chosen), the site became much friendlier in appearance and easier on the eyes.

Next step was cleaning up the hierarchy. Users now know what section they are in at all times and it’s clear how to navigate through the site.

The response from users has been overwhelmingly positive thus far, citing the new color scheme and ease-of-use.

Logo design for Niemi, Jerabek & Kretchmer, a full-service family law firm out of Minneapolis.

The client (yes, related - more on that later) provided the following words when requesting the design of the logo: bold, modern and professional. They also wanted to see some traditional options.

I’ve done many logos/wordmarks for lawyers over the past few years, and honestly most of the requests follow the same pattern of bold, modern/traditional and professional. Because of this, when starting a project that I’ve done for another client in the past, I refer back to old designs so I don’t end up delivering something too similar.

After creating a handful of both modern and traditional options, the client narrowed it down to one of each. In the end, they decided on the more traditional logo. I used a bold typeface (Trajan) and added a strong flair with the ampersand that reaches out across the name. As for colors, navy blue was a requirement and I added gold for richness and a traditional, nostalgic look.

As far as working for a relative (my older brother), it can get tricky. You want to provide the service that you would any other client, but you can’t help but remember the time they stole the twinkie from your lunchbox. Thankfully we kept it pretty professional and both he and his partners liked the logo so much they had a large sign created for their office hallway.

Still mad about the twinkie.

I was tasked with creating a logo and wordmark for a software product that connects web applications together, simplifying people’s lives. The client had some great ideas for me to work with - weaving, tying, connecting.

While brainstorming, I was very drawn to the simplicity in connecting this software would be providing to it’s customers and focused on that specifically. We ended up with this very simple and recognizable logo and accompanied it with a modern, clean typeface. The client also requested to keep the logo in shades of black, white and gray to keep rolling with the simplicity aspect.

Our marketing department had an idea to create some unique handouts for an upcoming trade show. We are a technology company that specializes in local news among other things and wanted to create something a little more personal than generic brochures and one-sheets.

We came up with the idea of trading cards for our top executives and salespeople, figuring it would be a fun and different way for people to get to know our staff. Originally we toyed around with creating old fashioned cards but as we are a technology company, decided against that route.

I ended up really focusing on creating both lively and modern cards. One the backs of the cards are quotes as well as contact information for each person.

The reaction was fantastic. People commented on the original and personal effect the cards provided, providing a face to a name in a fun way.
